Anders als bei Weizen und Mais dient die Ernte dieser drittgrößten Getreidefläche zu 92 % als Lebensmittel. Reis wird seit über 8000 Jahren angebaut. Beim sogenannten Nassreisanbau (80 % der Flächen) stehen die bewässerten Felder durchgängig unter Wasser. Das erspart Unkrautbekämpfung und bringt hohe Erträge. Dafür entsteht das Faulgas Methan, ein echter Klimakiller.
