Flax fiber
Linum usitatissimum
Flax, or linseed, is the oldest cultivated fiber crop. It was first domesticated 6000 years ago in Mesopotamia. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Germany was the world’s leading flax producer. Alongside hemp, nettle, and wool, the resulting linen was a commonly used textile fiber up until the 19th century. Thereafter, its cultivation area decreased as a result of cotton trade. The environmental movement has caused a minor comeback of flax fiber since the 1980s.

Soybean
Glycine max
In its native China, soybean is referred to as the “meat of the earth” and has been processed to tofu for millennia. Today, soybean is the most important oil and protein plant in the world, with its success being due to its role as animal fodder rather than as a meat substitute. Meat factories worldwide feed hundreds of millions of tons of crushed soybean meal. The soybean is the source of more than half of the world’s vegetable oil. In South America, soybean monocultures are expanding at an extreme rate, and most of these crops are genetically engineered to be pesticide resistant.

Cotton
Gossypium
About 7000 years ago, people in Mexico and India independently began using the soft, fluffy cotton fiber to produce clothing. To this day, cotton remains the world’s most important textile fiber and is traded on the global market. It was historically cultivated and harvested by enslaved people, while today, this work is done mostly by poor people, including children, wherever plenty of sunshine and water are available. Cotton monocultures require particularly large quantities of pesticides. Cotton seeds are used to produce vegetable and industrial oil.
