In Central and South America, squash is thought to have been cultivated as far back as 10,000 years ago. Traditionally, it was interplanted with corn and beans, a trio called the “three sisters.” In Europe, the most commonly cultivated species are Cucurbita pepo, C. maxima, and C. moschata. Squash is botanically considered a fruit, specifically a berry, and it is the plant producing the largest berries and seeds. In Austria and elsewhere, its seeds are used to produce delicious oil. Squashes come in a wide range of shapes and colors, and the fruit can weigh up to a metric ton.

La courge était déjà cultivée en Amérique centrale et en Amérique du Sud il y a 10 000 ans. Traditionnellement, elle partageait les champs avec le maïs et les fèves. En Europe, ce sont surtout la citrouille, le potiron et la courge musquée qui prospèrent. D’un point de vue botanique, la courge est une plante avec de gros fruits et de grosses graines. Ces derniers sont exploités notamment en Autriche pour produire une huile délicieuse. Il existe toute sorte de courge de forme et de couleur différente, pouvant peser jusqu’à une tonne.

Dynia prawdopodobnie była już uprawiana 10.000 lat temu w Ameryce Środkowej i Południowej. Na naszym polu rośnie w uprawie mieszanej z kukurydzą i fasolą. W Europie dojrzewają głównie dynie ogrodowe, dynie olbrzymie i dynie piżmowe. Z botanicznego punktu widzenia dynia jest rośliną z największymi owocami i nasionami. W Austrii z jej nasion uzyskuje się olej o bardzo aromatycznym smaku. Dynia może przybierać rozmaite kształty i kolory, a jej ciężar może osiągnąć jedną tonę.

Der Kürbis wurde wohl schon vor 10000 Jahren in Mittel- und Südamerika kultiviert. Hier wird er traditionell in einer Mischkultur mit Mais und Bohnen angepflanzt. In Europa gedeihen vor allem der Gartenkürbis, der Riesenkürbis und der Moschuskürbis. Botanisch ist der Kürbis die Pflanze mit den größten Beeren und Samen. Aus seinen Kernen wird z. B. in Österreich ein besonders wohlschmeckendes Öl gewonnen. Er weist eine enorme Formen- und Farbenvielfalt auf und kann bis zu einer Tonne schwer werden.
